Preparation
It's official...I'm an ESL teacher...BEFORE Costa Rica! WorldTeach requires all of its year-long volunteers to volunteer with ESL/TESOL/etc classes before leaving for their country. During my freshman year at DePaul, I participated in Intercambio classes at Centro Romero, a community organization that helps the refugee immigrant population in northeast Chicago. (Check them out! http://www.centroromero.org/) I contacted them to see how I could be of help again, and Cesar Aguilar, the director of the Adult Education program, decided to give me my own ESL class. I will be teaching a conversational level of English on Tuesday and Thursday nights, starting next week! I have met with Cesar a few times after this was first decided, and met with him again this week to pick up a few final papers to use in my first few classes. The 26th is approaching very quickly, and I have to admit...I'm nervous! I went into this assuming I would be a tutor or teacher's assistant, but I know this will give me great experience for Costa Rica! Wish me luck!
